Because plan economics differ, the useful comparison is not simply “which subscription is cheaper?” but whether a lower transaction fee offsets a higher recurring plan cost at your expected sales volume. Squarespace has been rolling out newer Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced plans. Its current help documentation lists a 2% commerce transaction fee on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus and Advanced. Legacy Business/Commerce plans have different rules. Payment processing remains a separate cost layer.
A higher monthly plan can still be economical when it reduces a percentage transaction fee and order volume is high enough. Conversely, a lower-volume store may pay more for an upgrade than it saves in transaction fees. The calculator lets you test that crossover with your own assumptions.
Assume a $50 order, $18 product cost, $6 fulfillment, $7 advertising and $1 other variable cost. On a newer Basic plan, a 2% commerce transaction fee would add $1.00. Using the current U.S. Squarespace Payments standard-card example of 2.9% + $0.30 adds $1.75 in processing. If $40 of monthly site/app cost is spread across 100 orders, allocated overhead is $0.40. Total modeled cost is $35.15 and profit is $14.85, a 29.7% margin. On a plan with 0% commerce transaction fee, the same example would save $1 per order before considering the different subscription price.
